Shaoxing River Complex and Garden

Shaoxing, China

A building articulated as four towers on a 7-acre site, bifurcated by a highway, adjacent to a rail line and canal, finally restored to a park.

The program is straightforward, commercial retail with hotel and office above, a quarter of which will be co-working offices for the emerging Independent entrepreneurs of a younger generation. The client wants to place the identities of four prime tenants on the outside of the tower, so we made four towers and fused them into one. A full height atrium connects them and makes interior informal work-meeting places. The base is linked spatially to the Irish Pavilion by a bridge, to a new parkland across the highway via tunnel, and to the canal with the addition of a boardwalk and a boat dock.
